Sneaker 08: It's My Flag Too
IT'S MY FLAG TOO
Clay: Black Coarse Clay/White Nordic Ice, Crown Decal
This shoe is made from two halves: black and white, with the red cross of St. George running through it.
It represents my thoughts on Britishness, identity and who gets to decide what it means to belong.
I watched as the St George's flag was being put up on lamp posts and sprayed on roundabouts. This wasn’t a symbol of pride or solidarity but used to make people feel unwelcome.
Politicians were now weaponising immigration and hotels were being attacked. Who decides who gets to claim it? And why should a symbol of national identity make anyone feel they don't belong?
I shouldn't have to choose as it’s my flag too.
